SWON Libraries members often ask us about the best ways to recycle electronic equipment. It can be difficult to find locations that accept computers, cell phones, and other items.
In honor of the 40th Earth Day on April 22, 2010 and as a service to our members, SWON Libraries will be accepting certain types of electronic equipment that you would like to discard during the entire month of April. We will take care of appropriate recycling of the items, as long as they are included on the list below. The staff is committed to this effort as a service to our members and to Planet Earth.
With the help of the Lane Public Library and a Library Services and Technology Act “Choose to Read” grant from the State Library of Ohio, author Andrea Cheng made the first of three visits Friday, March 19, to Cleveland Elementary to help guide a project based on her book “Where the Steps Were.”“Where the Steps Were” is a novel in verse inspired by the closing of the Windsor Elementary School in Cincinnati where Cheng’s sister taught and where she volunteered every Friday.
The book follows the year through the eyes of five different children at the fictional Pleasant Hill Elementary as they prepare to move to a new school and see their old school demolished.

Re: Lane Libraries Levy educational bookmarks
On March 17, 2010, staff began distributing Lane Libraries Levy educational bookmarks. Circulation staff will place the bookmarks in checked out items. Reference staff will also have a supply to distribute.
In all matters regarding the levy, Lane employees will operate under the guidelines established by the Secretary of State. These guidelines specify that while “on the clock” Lane employees can state facts, but not advocate a position on the levy. It is important that we interact in a positive manner, regardless of positive, negative or neutral reactions regarding the levy from our patrons.
The following are possible questions and suggested answers. Please let me know of other questions you are asked. I will be glad to update the list with your input.
What is the levy all about? (Point out Facts section)
Why should I vote for the levy? (Point out Facts and Goals)
If I vote yes, will my taxes go up? (Point out Facts)
I do not want the bookmark. (Okay, anything else I can help you with today?)
How can I work to pass the levy? (Point out Get Involved)
If the levy passes, will the old hours be restored? (Point out Goals)
What will happen if the levy fails? (We will continue to offer the best service possible)
I’m not voting for the levy. (Okay, How else can I help you today?)
I’ve seen some yard signs. Can I get one? (Email yard sign requests to: supportersoflane@gmail.com)
If I vote no, will you lose your job? (No one knows what the future will be but we will continue to offer the best service possible.)
Is there a phone number I can call? (You may call our P.R. Dept at 894-6557 and they will assist you.)
I don’t have an email account or a computer at home. (Reference staff would be glad to help you access the web site and/or set up an email account.)
